Brattle Theatre uses Kickstarter to go digital
It worked for Lexington-bred Amanda Palmer. Now Harvard Square’s Brattle Theatre will kick start its own fundraising campaign with the Kickstarter crowdsourcing website. The single-screen Cambridge cinema hopes to raise at least $140,000 to fund a state-of-the-art digital projection system and HVAC upgrade.
According to Ned Hinkle, creative director for the Brattle: “To be clear, we’ll still show 35mm prints after the upgrade, but we need DCP [Digital Cinema Package] in order in order to continue our one-of-a-kind repertory programming, because many movies will only be available digitally going forward.”
And while the 60-year-old Brattle wants patrons to be comfortable, its more than 20-year-old HVAC system has “a lot of chewing gum and duct tape holding it together,” according to executive director, Ivy Moylan.
The campaign runs through Feb. 28.
