Lead Software Engineer - Digital Marketplaces

Summary:

Boston Globe Media Partners is going through a massive phase of growth, expansion, and innovation. One of our key initiatives is a new big data product that will touch on all facets of BGMP’s online offerings. We’re hiring a Lead Software Engineer to be the architect of that product and to guide a team of developers in creating it. This is not a position for the timid or weak of heart. The Lead Software Engineer for this new project will collaborate with business analysts, project managers, the editors of the newsroom, and every member of the BGMP IT staff. The Lead Engineer will be expected to mentor Software Engineers and perform the duties of a technical lead on projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Builds and leads a team of experienced engineers and front end developers
  • Reviews and influences ongoing design, architecture, standards, and methods for the Boston Globe, boston.com, and bostonglobe.com, and the family of BGMP online properties.
  • Develops innovative media and business solutions through process engineering, collaborating with our customers to recommend changes in policies and procedures when appropriate,and delivering high quality software through a standardized software development life cycle.

Director of Product Development

Summary:

We need a strategic thinker and leader who can articulate a clear product vision for one of a diverse range of digital properties. Someone who can tame a mighty project pipeline, define user experience for a fast-moving business unit, and shape every aspect of the consumer journey. This leader will oversee an aggressive team of product managers, providing insight in support of BGM’s evolving global strategy.

The Director will serve as a champion of lean product development across desktop and mobile platforms. Inhaling analytics and exhaling product iteration, the Director will be a treasured friend to front end and systems engineers, user interface designers, editorial producers and data analysts, constantly listening to their concerns and refining product scopes. This will be a senior leader who will sit furthest upstream in the product execution funnel, gathering requirements, writing end-to-end functional specifications, managing the project queue and communicating project status to support editorial, marketing and business initiatives.

Boston Globe Media is seeking a strategic visionary to drive its cross-platform advertising operation across our diverse range of digital properties (BostonGlobe.com, Boston.com, BDCWire.com, RadioBDC.com, BetaBoston.com). The Director will own the development, execution and growth of our digital revenue and advertising capabilities and help us transform BGM into a cutting-edge media operation, fully realizing the true value of a world-class journalism organization.

The Director will be responsible for optimizing existing advertising solutions, sure, but the real excitement lies in creating never-before-seen advertising capabilities, infusing genius industry insights into ongoing business decisions, and identifying brand new market opportunities. He/she will build and manage an entire multi-functional team overseeing business development, indirect revenue optimization, total revenue yield management, technical advertising integration and new product creation. This position will work closely with the digital business units (Boston.com, Bostonglobe.com, Digital Marketplaces) Sales, and Sales Development to represent and implement our digital revenue needs.

Responsibilities:

Director, Audience Growth & Business Development

Summary:

Boston Globe Media (The Boston Globe, boston.com, bostonglobe.com) is seeking a candidate to drive traffic growth, audience engagement, and subscription conversion across Boston’s most influential websites.

BGM is looking for a dynamic leader whose vision will aggressively grow its daily audience and subscriber base through email, social media, SEO and via innovative partnerships. Managing a team of analytic-minded traffic growth specialists, the Director will use all available levers to build and execute a plan for maximizing the BGM user-base.

This role requires someone who will take calculated risks to drive unprecedented growth in national audience through creativity, data-driven insights, optimization, and continuous improvement. Forging relationships with strategic partners and vendors that move the needle for the entire BGM digital operation will also be a key component of the role. In order to succeed in this mission, the Director must stay on top of all the most important emerging trends evolving in the digital media ecosystem so that s/he can take advantage of them for the BGM website. Responsibilities:

  • Managing a small team of reporters
  • Assigning, editing, and publishing 12-14 stories a day
  • Recruiting and developing outside contributors on a wide range of subjects
  • Working with product, design, and development to continuously iterate site functionality and appearance
  • Managing BetaBoston-branded social media accounts
  • Participating in Globe-sponsored events as the public face of the site
  • Liaising with the Globe’s business department on stories and coverage

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience

Digital Editor/Web Producer

Summary:

The Boston Globe Opinion section is looking for an experienced and dynamic journalist to join their team as digital lead.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for digital storytelling, experience with using analytics data, and a dedication to the type of deep, meaningful journalism that the Globe produces.

The digital editor plays a critical role in the Opinion department, working closely with the editorial desk, the Ideas section, the Sunday editor, and other columnists, contributors and editors on stories and projects.The editor touches all the digital content that flows through the section, from monitoring social media, to producing print content for web, and is a creative force that imagines and oversees development of innovative, digital Globe Opinion journalism.

While this position is embedded within the Opinion section, there is constant communication with the rest of the BostonGlobe.com staff in the newsroom. The editor works with his or her counterparts in other sections to achieve traffic goals and increase user engagement, and must build relationships with a variety of key internal stakeholders, including section editors, digital product development teams, analytics specialists and producers.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Editorial Page editor, Opinion staff and editorial board, BostonGlobe.com editor, and senior leadership to meet goals of growing traffic and producing superior journalism
  • Drive digital initiatives through close coordination with the Globe Opinion staff
  • Plan digital content and online production for daily columns and editorials, larger Sunday packages, and special projects, including producing content on the BostonGlobe.com section front.
  • Write relevant online-only articles, and suggest topics for other writers and columnists
  • Work with the graphics, video, photo, and data departments to build multimedia packages
  • Monitor traffic and drive user-engagement to the section
  • Establish best digital practices for the department
  • Distribute news over Globe-branded social media accounts
  • Maximize SEO traffic to stories
  • Create and promote innovative new multiplatform storytelling tools, techniques and technologies across the department
  • Assist with development and production of new and existing digital products for the section
  • Maintain and enforce journalistic best-practices that uphold Globe principles

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • At least 5 years experience in online media or equivalent, with minimum 3-5 years of digital experience

Executive Assistant - Boston Globe Media, Digital Products

Summary:

The digital products team at Boston Globe Media is looking for a highly organized & proactive individual. You'll be the Executive Assistant to our two Executive Directors of Digital Strategy & Operations for Boston.com and Digital Marketplaces. The key function of this role is to enable them to accomplish their day to day work by handling much of the department administration, being a liaison between the Directors and other departments needing their input, providing scheduling assistance, and helping with a variety of essential projects as they arise.

This is an excellent opportunity for anyone that wants to be immersed in a high-paced, transformative media environment. By necessity, you will need to be one step ahead of this environment, possessing the ability to anticipate and prevent difficulties as well as manage the items of the day. Superior planning skills & detail-orientation are key.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Facilitating communication & coordination between the directors and other departments.
  • Email & calendar management.
  • Tracking and managing expenses.
  • Coordinating and supporting meetings; prepare for meetings (e.g. gather background data, distribute agendas); attend meetings.
  • Taking notes from meetings, making sure relevant information / action items are disseminated as follow-ups.
  • Coordinating new employee onboarding.
  • Arranging travel, preparing itineraries, registering executives/staff as needed for meetings and conferences.
  • Creating a great office environment (welcoming new employees, helping to organize social events, ensuring people have supplies, troubleshooting any workspace concerns from the department).

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Comfort working directly with senior-level individuals and their schedules.
  • Excellent professional communication skills.
  • Ability to be professional and personable with everyone from the cleaning crew to government officials.
  • Ability to absorb a high volume of information in a short amount of time, complete requests with little information, and learn the preferences of who you are supporting.
  • Fluency with email/calendar programs (we use Google’s business toolsuite), superior email management skills (filtering, prioritization, followup) and calendar management skills (prioritization, finding the best time from multiple schedules, ability to optimize meeting schedules).
  • Willingness to help & support others, think creatively about how to maximize time, and push projects forward.
  • Several years of professional experience, preferably in an administrative, project management, or office management role.
