Capsule review:
This Japanese restaurant cuts both ways. Go the group dining route and let a teppanyaki chef dice, slice, and sizzle your dinner on a large hibachi grill before you and other guests. Or have a private meal of sushi or cooked Japanese favorites. One standout is foil yaki, a foil pouch brimming with scallops, shrimp, clam, white fish and sweet haddock fish cakes.

What a delightful atmosphere--we had a group and sat in the Hibachi room--and was a delicious meal with our entrees cooked at our table. Great for parties! We also had the opportunity to sample the sushi & the chef/owner is Japanese & offers the best authentic Japanese cuisine in the Boston area. I can't praise this excellent restaurant enough. We all enjoyed the congenial atmosphere & fantastic meal.

Saw on TV Diner & Asahi had great reviews (gold) so decided to try. Billy Costa was on the money--the sushi chef (with 40 yrs experience) demonstrated his expertise & it showed.
Much to my surprise Asahi also has a Hibachi Grill Room (chef cooks at your table). I reserved the room for my company party and was a great success.
I believe their success is the fresh quality of the sushi as well as the the fact that soup, salad, rice & green tea are included.
Across from the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem makes this a convenient & desirable location.
