Capsule review: Chef/owner Jacky Robert masterfully shows us what a bistro should be -- delicious, rustic dishes, a wide variety, generous hours, and prices that make returning often a possibility. (6/2/05)

The Red Sox were in town on Saturday night so legal parking in Kenmore Square was nearly impossible. After finding a lot we found our way to this downstairs bistro. Half the tables were empty so we expected good service. Indeed all started well. Our server brought warm bread, explained the specials and answered our questions. The sangria is mixed with fruit pulp, the rabbit stew contains bones, The lobster special was highly recommended, they will gladly serve the sauces separately. We were comfortably seated with a good view of the open kitchen. The sangria was nicely chilled with a tart flavor. Our first course arrived quickly - the onion soup spilled onto to doily. It had a nice crust mild-bodied beef flavor and soft onions topped with crusts of molten cheese. Would prefer that it be served at a higher temperature and with a bolder flavor. Still it rates above average. The bowl of carrot-tomato-shrimp puree was half full, but that was more than enough of this tasteless daily special. It took a while for the entree to arrive and we had to ask a waiter for more water while waiting. The fellow in the kitchen frequently scatches his face and rubs his beard. The main course included overcooked pork tenderloins in a cream sauce with a tasty mash potato and vegetable medley. The skirt steak was cooked to perfection and the pepper sauce enriched the flavor. French fries were too salty to eat. Be patient for service but stay for dessert. The chocolate gateau is a must. The macaroons ordinary. Get your coffee at Starbucks. Overall an average experience. My recommendation: just come for the chocolate cake with mini Eiffel tower.
