The driver of an 18-wheeler dozed off and did not see that traffic in front of him was slowing, causing him to crash into the limo bus carrying Tracy Morgan, ABC News reports.
New Jersey State Police Sgt. First Class Gregory Williams told the network that the driver “failed to observe slow-moving traffic ahead,” and “observed at the last minute—just prior to impact—the limo bus carrying Morgan and his party.”
According to The New York Times, the truck driver has been identified as Kevin Roper, 35, of Jonesboro, Ga. He was charged today with one count of death by auto and four counts of assault by auto, according to Middlesex County’s acting prosecutor and the state police.
James McNair, a comedy writer for Morgan, was killed in the crash.
Morgan and his assistant, Jeff Milea, are still in critical condition after the six-vehicle pile-up. They were on their way back from one of Morgan’s performances for his “Turn it Funny” tour in Dover, Del., Friday night.
The conditions of the two other victims, identified as Ardie Fuqua and comedian Harris Stanton, have not been released.
