Yes, you read the headline right. One of Cambridge’s golden boys, Matt Damon, willingly poured water he scooped from toilets (several) over his head when he accepted ice bucket challenges from Jimmy Kimmel and Ben Affleck.

If you’re just as grossed out as his wife was at the thought of the act, Damon has a message for you: “Keep in mind that the water in our toilets in the West is actually cleaner than the water that people in the developing world have access to. So as disgusting as this may seem, hopefully it’ll highlight the fact that this is a big problem and together we can do something about it.”

The Academy Award-winning actor explained that he chose the er, alternative water source to fill his bucket not only because there is a drought in California (where he filmed the feat), but he also co-founded Water.org, an organization that aims to give developing nations access to clean drinking water and bathing water.

“We envision a day when everyone has access to a clean drink of water and there are about 800 million people in the world who don’t,” Damon explained. “And so, dumping a clean bucket of water on my head seemed a little crazy.”

After pouring the icy cold concoction over his head, Damon (who also plans to donate to ALS research) nominated three folks: “George Clooney, my favorite actor; Bono, my favorite musician; and Tom Brady, the greatest quarterback of all time.”

As of Aug. 25, the ice bucket challenge raised $79.7 million, according to a release from the ALS Association. For more information on Water.org, head to the organization’s website.
