Cirque du “Avatar?”
James Cameron is planning to bring the blue Na’vi of Pandora to life in a new live tour.
According to Deadline, the “Avatar” director is teaming up with Cirque du Soleil to develop an arena show inspired by the film. Cameron and Cirque du Soleil president and CEO Daniel Lamaare announced the news at the C2MTL-Commerce and Creativity Conference on Thursday, May 28.
“Over the years, I have discovered the extraordinary talents and imaginations of both the artists and the creative forces behind Cirque du Soleil,” Cameron said in a statement. “I know we share the common goal of bringing audiences to another level of entertainment experiences. I look forward to doing just that on this project.”
The show is expected to debut in the later part of 2015 and will start touring before the first of the three planned “Avatar” sequels in released in theaters.
The original 2009 flick went on to become the highest grossing Hollywood film of all time, taking in over $2 billion at the box office and earning three Academy Awards.
It will be interesting to see if its sequels, the first of which is slated to hit theaters in 2016, can match the success of the first “Avatar.”
