Annual Candle Light Vigil at (Boston) -- The 6th annual Candle Light Vigil at the Boston Irish Famine Memorial takes place on Tuesday, March 16, 2004 from 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m at the corner of School and Washington Street in downtown Boston. Father Jimmy Kelly and Sister Marguerite Kelly of the Irish Pastoral Centre in Boston will lead the gathering in prayer and reflection on behalf of people suffering from hunger around the world today and throughout history. The candlelight vigil features singing, prayer and reflection as it commemorates the victims of the 19th century Irish Famine, which killed over one million people and sent nearly two million Irish into exile, many of whom came to Boston. The ceremony also expresses concern for people who continue to suffer from famines in Africa and Asia, according to Memorial committee chairman Philip C. Haughey. The Boston Irish Famine Memorial was unveiled in June 1998 as part of the 150th anniversary of the Famine. It has become one of the most popular memorials in the City of Boston and is viewed by millions of people each year.
