The toilet's leaking. There's only a bottle of ketchup in the fridge. And the oven hasn't been cleaned since the last attempt at a roast.

This is probably the reality for many first-time renters. Last month, the masses of college students moved back to Boston and other college towns. Amidst the flurry of picking up textbooks, checking out classrooms, and making new friends, many were probably setting up their off-campus apartments. And not too long before that, newly minted graduates were also moving into their first real apartments.

If you're a renter, you must already have intimate knowledge of the exhilarating and frustrating highs and lows of renting. For those who are new to renting and just learning to be independent, get ahead of the game by stocking up your "renter's arsenal" to prepare for any moments of d'oh!

1. Cookina BBQ and Cuisine Cooking Sheets; $28.90

Little expenses add up. Besides, not everyone always remembers to pick up aluminum foil, parchment paper, or cooking oil at the supermarket. The reusuable, nonstick, and food-safe Cookina mat works as an alternative to aluminum foil or parchment paper and can withstand heat up to 500 degrees. You can use the mat on the grill, as a baking sheet, or on the bottom of the oven, saving you money and from shopping hassle.

2. BluApple Starter Kit; $18

Every renter has struggled with the problem of not finishing food before it goes bad. These BluApples extend the life of produce by naturally absorbing ethylene gas to slow down the ripening process. They’re non-toxic, recyclable, and refillable. The starter kit comes with two apples as well as a generous 12-month supply of refills. What are you waiting for?

3. Three by Three Weekly Magnetic Dry Erase Glass; $35

When youíre renting, there isnít always room in the budget to constantly eat out; it will slowly burn a hole in your pocket. Why not plan out your meals? This modern dry erase board is made of shatterproof tempered glass with a metal backing, allowing you to stick photos and receipts to the board with the included magnets. Itís great for organizing what youíll cook day by day t0 avoid surprises in your bank account.

4. DrainWig Clog Preventer (Set of 4); $19.95

At some point, most people have had problems with hair in the shower drain. If youíd rather not see the plumber at your door or hear your roommate complain, protect your drains by dropping one of these easy-to-install and low-maintenance hair traps onto your shower drain; the whiskers will collect hair to prevent buildup.

5. sugru Self-Setting Rubber; Starting at $18

This is play-doh for adults who like to fix things. This soft-touch silicone rubber is pliable, sticks to almost any type of surface, and sets permanently. Use it to reinforce cell phone charger cables, fix drawer knobs, or patch up a disintegrating switch -- the uses are endless. You can even use it to label your chargers so your roommates wonít mistakenly take off with one.
