Have you heard? After five years and more than 1,500 story launches, The Grommet is celebrating its fifth anniversary with Grommets beautifully crafted of wood and other rustic materials.
A couple of years ago, I started taking a liking towards coffee, the color teal, and coincidentally, the material wood. Coffee has definitely found its way into my mornings while I also noticed the uptick of teal in fashion and home decor. And when I noticed the return of wood as a choice material, I was pleasantly surprised.
For a while, it seemed like the world was only focused on new-age materials. But now, there’s a revival of appreciation for old things and traditional building elements. One of them is wood, and it just has a wonderful aesthetic to it. Things feel solid, look great, and with the right care, last long. At The Grommet, some of our American handcrafters and creators make beautiful Grommets using wood.
Our collection of wooden Grommets comes just in time for our wooden anniversary. It’s been five years of launching undiscovered products and helping them -- as well as the people and stories behind them -- succeed.
Here is a five-item roundup of some The Grommet’s one-of-a-kind wooden products:
1. WRAPPED LA (Set of 3 Gift Boxes); $48
Presentation is an important element of gifting; hence the huge gift wrapping industry. Every holiday season, we actually create a lot of waste throwing out just wrapping paper alone. With these reusable gift boxes, make your gift truly stand out in smooth wooden style.
Handcrafted from western red cedar and finished with linseed oil, these wooden beer carriers are handsome and rustic. The maker takes the name of his craft from Meriwether Lewis of the epic explorer duo Lewis and Clark. If you’re bringing beer to a party, raise the bar by transporting them in one of his wooden carriers.
3. thinksound Earbuds; $69.95
In the audio world, there is no substitute for the sound that real wood offers, and the founder, Aaron Fournier, creates in-ear headphones made of real lychee wood for crisp, accurate music reproduction. What’s more is that the wood is sourced from renewable sources.
4. Folia Design SF Earrings; $44
These lovely and natural earrings are made from laser cut bamboo, which is lightweight and still strong enough for the laser cutting and etching process. With wood as a material for items spanning from tables to gift boxes, it’s only natural to make gorgeous jewelry out of this fundamental medium as well.
5. Byer of Maine Clipper Bluebird Home; $44.50
Mango trees are a renewable resource in Thailand, where they stop producing fruit after 10 to 15 years so they’re cut down for wood (and new trees are planted). These birdhouses are sculpted from the harvested trunks. Hand-turned by artisans, they’re not only great for your feathered friends, they look great outside your house.
