Q. My yellow canvas awnings are still in good shape, but are fading considerably. Can I paint them?

G.L., Canton

A. Yes. Wash and bleach the awnings, rinse off the bleach, let dry and apply thinned latex house paint, or possibly a solid color latex stain. You probably won't have to thin the stain because it is already pretty thin. The idea of thinning the stain or paint (not much thinning is necessary) is that it will penetrate the canvas without forming a film, which would crack. Try to stick to the same color; it will cover better, and if it peels or cracks, you will not get a big contrast between old and new colors.
