Q. The attic in my 1897 house has shallow floor joists, with 3 1/2 inches of fiberglass between those joists. There is also a sort of catwalk on the floor, a narrow wood ``path'' leading to windows. An insulator will add cellulose to the floor to increase the insulation. How can I keep the catwalk and still have enough insulation?

LEE SPENCER, Marshfield

A. Raise the catwalk. Take up the catwalk boards, and nail 2 x 6 joists at right angles to the joists, the length of the attic and two feet apart. When the cellulose is applied, it can be poured between those newly-laid joists as well as on the entire floor. Then nail boards on the two joists.
