Q. Can I put moss in a compost pile? A.C. A. Yes, it's organic, just as grass clippings and other plant material is organic. But why dig up the moss? It is attractive and grows in places where grass and other plants cannot. The Japanese revere it, Americans seem to dislike it, particularly on a brick patio. But moss growing between the brick or other places gives the patio an antique look. The only place it does not belong is on roofs; it can cause decay of shingles. And, for those who like moss, here is a way to get it to grow, say, between bricks and in other interstices: Weed between bricks, then make a syrup of 1 cup sugar to a half-cup boiling water; boil till thickened. Put syrup on cracks and joints, then mist every day for a while. Within three weeks, moss should grow.
