Q. I had a leak between my chimney and roof and I was told I need new flashing; the contractor said he would install it for $300. Is that reasonable?

ELEANOR KRUCHAS, Norwood

A. It is reasonable, especially if it works. Flashing is the weakest point of a roof, and putting flashing properly around a chimney takes a lot of know-how and careful work. Put simply, metal flashing around a chimney is set against the chimney wall and the roof, and then a second set of flashing, called counter flashing, is set over the original flashing and mortared right into the brick for a watertight repair. This, as I said, is a simple description. But done correctly, and every roofer knows how, it will last longer than the roof.
