Q. How can I remove chewing gum from upholstery? It is a mess!

J.C., Braintree

A. Oil or peanut butter is the usual solvent for chewing gum, but you can use neither on upholstery. So try this: Scrape off as much as will come off, then dissolve the rest with a rubber cement solvent or a dry-cleaning fluid. Try this in an obscure area of the upholstery to make sure it does not affect the upholstery.
