Alva Reimer Myrdal, a former Swedish diplomat, has been chosen by the Albert Einstein Peace Prize Foundation as the first winner of its annual $50,000 award. Myrdal, 78, said from Stockholm that she humbly accepted the prize for peace "when we are so far from peace." She started her career as a teacher, became a prison assistant, held a number of UN posts after World War II and served as Swedish ambassador to India from 1955 to 1961. She is the wife of Gunnar Myrdal, winner of the 1974 Nobel Prize for economics.
