HEAD OF UN REFUGEES UNIT ACCEPTS NOBEL PRIZE

Author: Associated Press

Date: Thursday, December 10, 1981

Section: RUN OF PAPER

Poul Hartling, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, today accepted the 1981 Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of his office and the 10 million refugees it cares for around the world.

Hartling, a former prime minister of Denmark, will receive a check tomorrow for the equivalent of $180,000 before giving the traditional Nobel lecture.

He said after accepting the award that the money will be used to establish a trust fund for handicapped refugees. The United Nations has declared 1981 as the Year of Disabled Persons.

"We will use the funds to provide hospital care, artificial limbs, wheelchairs, all of which might otherwise be difficult due to lack of money," Hartling said.

The award was the second for the refugee organization, headquartered in Geneva. It won its first Peace Prize in 1955, in recognition of its aid to European refugees after World War II and as an inspiration to continue its task.
