NOBEL WINNER ON LEAVE FROM HARVARD
Date: Friday, October 2, 1981 "In a sense, I'm leaving certain aspects of the academic life to run a company," Gilbert said. "I'm excited by the challenge of building an industry, but I also want to maintain an active intellectual effort in basic research." Gilbert said that in addition to his expanded duties at Biogen, he also would like to maintain his laboratory and an active research group at Harvard. The university hasn't decided, however, whether that will be possible. Gilbert was a corecipient of the Nobel Prize for chemistry last year. He is Harvard's American Cancer Society professor of molecular biology and is known for pioneering research that helped make genetic engineering possible. Biogen, founded to exploit new techniques of genetic engineering, has headquarters in Geneva, and is building a laboratory in Cambridge. Gilbert has been named co-chairman of the board of supervisory directors of Biogen. He also will continue as chairman of the firm's 12-member scientific board.
