William Shockley, who theorizes that blacks are genetically inferior to
whites, was draped with a Swastika-emblazoned banner by an audience member
during Tanya Hart's live WBZ-TV show yesterday afternoon. An unidentified
woman walked onto the set during "People Are Talking" with the banner that
read "Nazi of the Year." Earlier, other people in the audience chanted ''Hit
the road . . . Nazi Shockley go to hell," leading to the first of two
longer-than-usual station breaks. Shockley, 74, is a Nobel Prize-winning
physicist who later turned his attention to genetics. His theories are
largely discredited by other scientists. More recently, Shockley has also
advocated that genetically "inferior" people be offered cash for voluntary
sterilization.
