A journalist who wrote an article comparing William Shockley's voluntary
sterilization plan to Nazi genetics, testified yesterday that he believed
Shockley's only objection to the German experiments was their focus on Jews.
The journalist, Roger Witherspoon, wrote the article in 1980 for the Atlanta
Constitution, and Shockley, who won a Nobel prize for his work with
transistors, filed a $1.25 million federal libel suit against Witherspoon and
Cox Enterprises Inc., which publishes the newspaper, protesting the comparison
between his proposals and Nazi experiments.
