Even fine writing in response couldn't make justice of the fact that American
writer Isaac Bashevis Singer was under police guard in Stockholm, Sweden, this
weekend because of threatening, anti-Semitic letters. The 80-year-old writer,
who won the 1978 Nobel Prize for his tales of Jewish life in prewar Poland,
received one letter at his home in New York and a second sent to a Swedish
publisher. A publishing spokeswoman said, "Singer finds the situation very
unpleasant." Police suspect a Swede wrote the letters, but no one has been
charged.
