TUTU TO RESIGN LEADERSHIP POST

Author: By Diego Ribadeneira, Globe Staff

Date: Saturday, September 9, 1995
Page: 17
Section: NATIONAL/FOREIGN

Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the Nobel Prize-winning South African cleric considered a hero of the fight to eradicate apartheid, will retire in June as leader of South Africa's Anglican churches.

Tutu's worldwide championing of human rights along with his forceful, nonviolent campaign to tear down apartheid made him one of the best-known religious figures of the past two decades.

Following his retirement next year, Tutu, 64, plans to spend a year on sabbatical leave at Emory University in Atlanta.

The United Jewish Appeal has scheduled its first trip to Israel specifically for gay and lesbian Jews.

So far about 30 people have signed up for the trip, scheduled for Dec. 18-27 at a cost of $2,500 per person, including airfare from New York. The United Jewish Appeal recently sponsored its first trip for interfaith couples.
