Fighting on
Bill Monbouquette, 71, has been through chemotherapy, gets regular transfusions, and needs a bone marrow and stem cell transplant. The former Red Sox ace refuses to yield in the battle of his life -- against leukemia. (Boston Globe, 12 a.m.)

Fielder a prince of power
Tim Wakefield will take a special interest in Prince Fielder when the Milwaukee Brewers come here this weekend for a three-game interleague series, and not just because Fielder at 23 became the youngest player in major league history to hit 50 home runs in a season last year. Colon may start for Tuesday
Let the countdown to Bartolo Colon's Red Sox debut officially begin. Having placed Clay Buchholz on the disabled list with a torn fingernail, the Sox need a starting pitcher Tuesday. Yesterday afternoon, Colon all but ensured he'll get the call after he allowed just one hit in six scoreless innings in Pawtucket's 2-0 win over host Buffalo. (Boston Globe, 12 a.m.)

Merloni on new playing field
Lou Merloni didn't wait until he was retired from professional baseball to pursue another career. The Framingham native was a media favorite when he was playing and he has parlayed that into a position at NESN. Earlier this week, Merloni was named a studio analyst for the Red Sox. Sox trip on Okajima's slip
Solo homers by Jason Varitek and Mike Lowell and a defensive gem by Manny Ramirez weren't enough to prevent the Sox from dropping their third consecutive game in which they had a three-run lead, and fourth straight game overall. Hideki Okajima surrendered a grand slam to Jay Payton that provided the difference. (Boston Globe, 5/15/08)

Skid stuff
The Red Sox began the game without their manager because of a death in the family. Then J.D. Drew came out in the third with a sprained left wrist after diving for a line drive (left). It only got worse, culminating in David Ortiz being ejected in the ninth as the Sox lost for the fourth time in five games. (Boston Globe)

Quarter not worth a lot
A quarter of the way through the season (41 games), the Sox can't seem to separate themselves from the AL East pack, holding just a half-game lead over the young and talented Rays as they begin a two-game series in Baltimore tonight.
