Your thoughts on the priest sexual abuse scandal

The priest sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic Church has been unfolding for 3 months now, not just locally, but also nationally and overseas. We'd like to hear your thoughts on what steps the church should take to address the problem. What can rank-and-file Catholics do? How can church officials regain the trust of the faithful?

My view is one of secular humanism. Religion should be a safe haven and do social good. Dogma has no place in any religion, as it only creates guilt, arrogance, sanctimoniousness, and superstition. Until the Catholic Church rids itself of the doctrines of celebacy, male chauvanism, abortion as a crime and its current hierarchal structure, it will not stand the test of time. In the meantime, Catholics will be wondering how to reconcile their need for spiritual sustenance with the current absolutism of the Church.

The catholic church has proven that they are a business, and should be treated as such. Force the church to be shut down, clergy treated as criminals, all assets sold off to help vistims, the poor and provide refunds / assistance to all who have been "hood-winked" by this conglomeration of pedophiles over the last few hundred or more years. Law stepping down means nothing, Law in jail is a positive step.

Church "officials" must begin to behave as Jesus taught us, namely, by truly serving God's children, not living in luxury and wielding unquestioned power and authority. Each day we learn anew of the corrupting influence of power and money. Opening the priesthood both to women and to those who are blessed with the sacrament of marriage would be a huge step in the right direction. The Holy Spirit will guide God's children, and Jesus will be present among us in spite of the locked doors behind which hide the Roman Catholic hierarchy.

Cardinal Law is the shepherd of the flock. He knew there were wolves in the flock and he kept sending in lambs. That is unacceptable behavior and he needs to resign.
