Broad Institute, a Cambridge biomedical research center, has received the largest gift worldwide for psychiatric research—$650 million—from philanthropist and businessman Ted Stanley, The Boston Globe reports.
The gift from philanthropist and businessman Ted Stanley, to be announced Tuesday, coincides with the publication of the largest genomic study of schizophrenia, which identified more than 100 spots in the genome that are associated with the disease.
According to the Globe, Stanley and his late wife, Vada, became invested in mental health issues due to their son Jonathan’s bipolar-disorder diagnosis during college. Jonathan, now an attorney and advocate for people with mental illness, was successfully treated with lithium, the Globe reported.
