In honor of Friday the 13th, we debunked the most common health myths. Next time someone tells you that you can’t have ice cream when you’re sick, you’ll be armed with facts in self-defense.

1)“Consuming dairy when you’re sick will make you worse.”
This is a total lie. While dairy can make your phlegm thicker, it doesn’t cause you to produce more.And a little ice cream can actually soothe your sore throat. So go ahead and indulge in some Ben and Jerry’s next time you have a cold.

2)“You can catch a cold from going outside with wet hair.”
This just isn’t true. The cold and flu are transmitted by viruses, not by the weather. The reason more people get the flu in winter is because the virus itself likes the cold. You’re just as likely to catch a cold whether you’re bundled up or not.

3)“Wait at least 30 minutes before swimming after eating.”
False. At least there’s some science behind this myth, it just got twisted along the way. Since blood rushes to your stomach after eating to facilitate digestion, people started to think that the rest of your body would cramp up, causing you to drown.
In truth, we have enough blood in our bodies to digest food without cramping. In the slight chance you do cramp, it probably wouldn’t be severe enough for you to drown.

5)“It takes 7 years to digest gum.”
Seven is a completley made-up number. Gum does take longer to digest than organic foods but usually not more than a week. Very few digestive issues have been linked to gum swallowing.

6) “Cutting your hair will make it grow faster.”
This is just wishful thinking. Your hair follicles, the organ that produces hair, don’t know when you cut your hair. Getting a trim might make your hair look longer and healthier, but it’s doesn’t change how fast it grows

7) “Chocolate causes acne.”
Is (thankfully) a myth. An unhealthy diet can cause you to break out, but it’s not linked to any specific food. Chocolate in moderation shouldn’t cause a problem.

8) “Taking a cold shower will make you less aroused.”
The shock of cold water can get rid of an erection, but it does not make you less sexually aroused. A shower does provide a distraction which can make you less aroused, but it’s not related to the shower’s temperature.
