Raytheon Company recently announced a not-to-exceed $3.3 billion order for providing the Patriot Air and Missile Defense System to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The UAE order exemplifies Raytheon's success internationally. It also caps a year of significant achievement for the Patriot program office based in Tewksbury, Mass., and for Raytheon's Integrated Air Defense Center in Andover, Mass. where Patriot systems are manufactured.
Twelve countries have selected the Patriot system as a key element of their national defense, and several more nations are evaluating the system. Recent awards for Patriot system upgrades have come from Kuwait, South Korea and Taiwan. Patriot has been relied upon by the US Army since the mid-1980s.
Patriot proven in combat
Raytheon is the prime contractor and system integrator for Patriot – the world's premier, combat-proven air and missile defense system protecting US and allied forces around the world.
Since its fielding, Patriot components have undergone a series of hardware and software enhancements advancing the system with new technologies and capabilities to ensure its effectiveness against all known and emerging threats.
"Demand for the upgraded Patriot system is supported by our
global team of partners and suppliers," said Sanjay Kapoor,
vice president of Patriot Programs for Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems. "The employees of Raytheon and all our supply partners stand ready to deliver these systems with the product quality and technical excellence for which we are well known."
Success designing the ship systems of tomorrow
Raytheon also recently completed mission systems equipment testing for the US Navy's new Zumwalt-class destroyers. The successful review validates ship systems stability and maturity, and officially authorizes the program's transition to full production.
This comprehensive review was the culmination of more than 90 separate design and production reviews held to confirm the readiness of the Zumwalt class. This series of reviews help ensure that all ship systems have been rigorously tested, proven and delivered to the shipyards well in advance, resulting in substantial cost savings.
Raytheon has also worked with the US Coast Guard to develop better ways for identifying and tracking suspicious vessels in order to help defend our shores. Trials have used Raytheon's Mission Profiling™ process designed to improve a USCG District Command Center's maritime security mission.
A company committed to its communities
These technical and business achievements are only part of the Raytheon story. The company also has a proud record of community involvement and has been lauded for its business practices.
Raytheon has been awarded the coveted Energy Star Sustained Excellence Award for its efforts to reduce energy consumption. The Company has been named one of Massachusetts' "Most Admired" companies by FORTUNE magazine, one of the 400 best-managed big companies by Forbes magazine, and received awards for diversity from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, Diversity Business, Careers and the Disabled, and the US Department of Labor.
In September, the New England Patriots unveiled The Hall at Patriot Place, the first of its kind education and sports experience in the world, sponsored by Raytheon. The Hall at Patriot Place presents an integrated math and science education program with lesson plans designed to combine elements of The Hall's exhibits in an engaging educational platform for visiting school groups. Additionally, the "In the Numbers" exhibit uses football to teach math and science in a fun and interactive way.
Raytheon is also the main force behind MathMovesU, an innovative program designed to engage middle school students with math at an age when their interest in the subject typically declines. Raytheon provides over $1 million in MathMovesU grants and scholarships annually.
