The following industry leaders are Massachusetts barrier breakers – the first minorities in the state to hold their positions.

Some firsts, like Governor Deval Patrick, are widely-known and celebrated. Others are barely a blip on the radar: after Willie O'Ree broke the NHL color barrier with the Bruins, newspaper headlines focused on the last-place Boston team defeating the Montreal Canadians 3-0.
