The key for '06: Job training
If you haven't made a New Year's resolution yet, you might consider signing up for work-related training as part of your pledge. Whether you're looking for a job or comfortably employed, adding to your skill set will only increase your value to an employer in the upcoming year.
"Upgrading the skills is the number one piece of advice" for Massachusetts job seekers in 2006 says Linnea Walsh, a spokesperson for the Massachusetts Department of Workforce Development.
"It's a rather tight labor market, so really job seekers can see an advantage by becoming more skilled and more current" in their profession's technologies, Walsh added.
As technology in the workplace improves at a break-neck pace, you need to keep abreast of these new developments or face the possibility of becoming obsolete.
Additional job education and skills can lead to more job security, or, if you're looking for a job, it can separate you from the rest of the candidates.
This doesn't mean you have to drop everything and start filling out those graduate school forms right away, however. Walsh says workers can often benefit just by taking certificate courses or classes.
The important thing, according to Walsh, is that you understand, and keep current with, the trends in your particular industry.
