BostonWorks Teacher Honor Roll

Our Readers Recall Their Best Teachers

The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.

-- William Arthur Ward

There is no profession more valuable to our nation's future than that of being a teacher. A good teacher goes beyond the subject at hand and helps students to see the world beyond their own experience. A good teacher doesn't open a single book, but rather, he opens his students' minds, inspiring them to pick up many books during a lifetime.

We are blessed, here in Massachusetts, to have many fine teachers who help shape our children's sense of themselves. Everyday these men and women touch the lives of those around them in positive and meaningful ways. And we would like now to say, "Thank you" for a job well done.

Since January, BostonWorks has been asking our readers-in announcements in The Boston Globe and on our website - to nominate a favorite teacher. More than 270 readers responded.

Our four recognized teachers were honored at a dinner reception on Tuesday, May 9 at the Seaport Hotel. The guest speaker was Katherine C. Boles, author of Who's Teaching Your Children: Why The Teacher Crisis Is Worse Than You Think And What Can Be Done About It.

Perhaps it's not surprising that one of our winners, when informed of this recognition, told us "I can't wait to get up every morning, I love what I do!" What better recommendation could there be for a profession that none of us can do without?
