Suffolk University offers summer program for teen artists
Teens hear the same question every September: "What did you do this summer?"
For those in the Art & Design Pre-College Program at Suffolk University, the answer is "a lot." The program includes painting and drawing as well as two- and three-dimensional design, with field trips and lectures for good measure. This range of activities is ideal for those who want to explore visual arts in-depth or prepare a college admission portfolio. Suffolk applicants can also use work from the summer program to waive the portfolio requirement for admission to its BFA programs.
"Pre-College gave me a good introduction to studio classes, and I was better prepared for college," says Alexandra Serpis, who completed the program in 2006.
And compared to other college programs, Suffolk's is very affordable. "Because it's not a residential program, we're able to keep costs down," says Karianne Noble, director of Continuing Education & Preparatory Programs. "The tuition covers instruction, art supplies, and field trips." While a reasonable price tag may appeal to parents, their creative teens are more interested in the experience.
"Making art all day" is just a cool answer to describe how you spent your summer.
