Region's hiring on the rise

By NEHRA, 5/09/2005

Hiring in the northeast is on the upswing. So says a sampling of the Northeast Human Resources Association's (NEHRA) 4,000 members, who expect to increase employment headcount over the next year. NEHRA recently conducted an e-survey of its members to determine hiring trends in local organizations. According to the study results, local hiring is on the rise, and recruiting budgets are expected to remain the same or increase slightly from last year.

"Hiring projections for the coming year look positive according to our latest e-Survey," said Lou Gaglini, co-chair of NEHRA's EMA/Staffing Special Interest Group. "Employers are making efforts to locate and hire the highest quality talent and are looking to utilize the Internet in both the recruiting and application processes," continued Gaglini.

Sixty one percent of those polled anticipate the number of full time employees to increase while 32% remain the same and only 7% expect a decrease over the next year. The majority of those hiring will add staff in the exempt (54%) and non exempt (39%) categories while only 6% of those hired will be temporary or contract workers.

Sixty four percent expect recruiting budgets to remain the same as last year's while 29% expect recruiting budget to increase and 7% foresee a decrease.

Those hiring will overwhelmingly use internal recruiting staff (92%) as a staffing resource. Internal reference checks are the most popular pre-employment screening tools (89%) followed by background checks (55%) and criminal history checks (54%).

Internet job boards (92%) and employee referrals (91%) are most often used to identify applicants. Corporate websites (78%) are another often-utilized recruiting tool followed by print advertising (62%) and college recruiting (47%). Radio and TV advertising ranked low at 5% and 1%, respectively.

Many companies (49%) plan to use online application processes (company website or online job boards) about the same amount in the coming year while 31% of companies plan to increase their use of online application processes.

In the current marketplace, finding the best talent is the greatest recruiting challenge (45%). Finding diverse talent (15%), having a competitive compensation program (10%) and retaining top talent (10%) also present challenges.

NEHRA's hiring e-survey, conducted online from April 13 - 27, 2005, had 277 respondents. To see the full survey results, visit NEHRA.com.
