Job training and development still a priority, says NEHRA survey

By NEHRA, 8/08/2005

According to a sampling of the Northeast Human Resources Association's (NEHRA) 4,000 members, job training and development remains an organizational priority. NEHRA recently conducted an e-survey of its members to determine training trends in local organizations.

More than half (55 percent) of those surveyed say training is "somewhat valued" in their organization while 39 percent say it is extremely valued.

In half of the companies, training budgets remain the same as last year while 36 percent have increased training budget and 14 percent have decreased. If they could budget for only one type of training, 36 percent of respondents would select leadership training. Other areas include job skills (17 percent), technical (14 percent), and coaching (14 percent).

More than a third of respondents (40 percent) say approximately 10 percent of training is outsourced. Another third (30 percent) say 30 percent is outsourced and the rest of those surveyed outsource between 10 and 30 percent.

Seventy-two percent of in-house training positions have remained the same in the past year while 20 percent of companies surveyed have increased the number of in-house training positions.

Eighty percent of organizations do not require a certain number of training hours per year. However, in the organizations that do require training hours, 38 percent require over 20 hours of training per year.

Fifty-seven percent of organizations' training programs are directly linked to the company's goals and strategies. Participants say senior management has some involvement (57 percent) or are very involved (31 percent) in training initiatives.

The majority of this e-survey's respondents had between 100-500 employees in their company.

NEHRA members are comprised of HR professionals, representing large and small companies in all industries within the region. 296 NEHRA members and nonmembers responded to the survey, which was conducted online between July 28-August 3, 2005. For full survey results, visit NEHRA.com.
