A study by the University of Massachusetts shows incomes of families in Southeastern Massachusetts have generally trailed those in Greater Boston, the North Shore, and the Cape. Figures are of family median income in 2006.

The study defined the regions as follows: Central: Ashby, Townsend, Groton, Shirley, Ayer, and most of Worcester County (except Bolton and Milford). Greater Boston: Bolton, Milford, Hingham, all of Suffolk County, most of Norfolk County (except for Plainville, Stoughton and Avon) and southern Middlesex County. Southeast: All communities in Bristol County and most of Plymouth County; along with Plainville, Stoughton and Avon Northeast: 42 communities in Essex County and northern Middlesex County, ranging from Pepperell to Marblehead, up to the New Hampshire border.
