THE COPIER AND the coffee machine are only a Segway ride away at the Natick insurance software and services company Enservio Inc. A senior vice president brought the machine to the office after winning it in a sweepstakes four years ago, and it’s been in use a dozen times a day ever since, whisking employees to the printer and through slalom courses around the desks.
Sales engineer David Moe, now out in the field, has used it to beat the rush of co-workers to the leftover Quiznos sandwiches after catered lunch meetings.
“It was the fastest way to get to the food. It was either that or you had to sprint,’’ said Moe, who rode the Segway so often he became the keeper of the key.
The Segway is so popular that the tires are worn out and the battery has to be pulled out and put back in every so often just to get it to start. There have been a few minor mishaps, mainly involving a daredevil employee. But most simply take a one- or two-minute jaunt around the office to recharge.
“When we’d get bored and wanted to relax for a while,’’ Moe said, “we’d just zip around on the Segway.’’
