The Massachusetts Extended Care Federation (MECF) is the state's largest long term care provider association, representing over 500 nursing and rehabilitation facilities, hospital-based transitional care units, assisted living residences and continuing care retirement communities. In all, MECF member facilities provide housing, health care and support services to more than 50,000 people in Massachusetts.

Represented among MECF's membership are nonprofit, proprietary and municipally owned facilities that employ more than 50,000 people and contribute nearly $3 billion annually to the Massachusetts economy. In addition, through its nonprofit education and research arm -- the Massachusetts Long Term Care Foundation -- the Federation awards $150,000 in scholarships each year to individuals working in long term care.

MECF is also the home of the Massachusetts Center for Assisted Living (MCAL), the association's assisted living and retirement housing arm. Since its founding in 1990, MCAL's mission has been to improve the quality and delivery of assisted living services in Massachusetts through advocacy and education.

Since its founding in 1949, MECF's mission has been to improve the quality and delivery of long term care services in Massachusetts through advocacy and education. To fulfill its mission, the Federation:

• Speaks out on legislative, regulatory and financing issues affecting long term care providers and consumers in Massachusetts;
• Collects and analyzes data relating to the delivery and financing of long term care services;
• Develops and sponsors quality improvement and continuing education programs for facility staff members;
• Provides information and referral services to consumers in need of long term care services through its toll-free consumer line (800-CARE-FOR), free consumer publications, and on the Internet at www.masslongtermcare.org; and
• Educates the public and policymakers about long term care issues.

A nonprofit organization, MECF is supported by member dues and governed by a board of directors elected by the membership. Represented on the MECF board are the presidents of the association's nine regional chapters, representatives of nonprofit and proprietary facilities, and owners and managers of independently owned and publicly traded companies.
