Massachusetts General Hospital
Founded in 1811, the Massachusetts General Hospital is the oldest and largest general hospital in New England and the third oldest in the United States with a history of groundbreaking medicine. With almost two centuries of practice, MGH has continually blazed a trail for others to follow through such achievements as being the first to demonstrate the use of ether as an anesthetic and the first to establish a hospital-based social service department. Patients come from all over the world to be treated at MGH because of its reputation as a world class medical institution.

As the oldest and largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, more than 90 percent of the hospital's active staff physicians are on the Harvard Medical School faculty. And at $200 million, our research budget is the largest for hospital-based research programs in the United States.
