Massachusetts Institute of Technology is an independent, coeducational and privately endowed university, which admitted its first students in 1865. Today, MIT is one of the world's leading universities, with the primary purpose of education and research. MIT is organized into five schools, which contain twenty-one academic departments, as well as many interdepartmental programs, laboratories and centers. The Institute is committed to providing students with a strong scientific, technical and humanist foundation and to encouraging them to develop creativity in defining problems and seeking solutions. Enrollment at MIT includes over 4,300 undergraduate students and over 5,400 graduate students.
MIT is located on 153.8 acres in Cambridge, MA (on the MBTA's Red Line) and extends more than a mile along the scenic Charles River Basin. We employ over 10,000 individuals, both on campus and at Lincoln Laboratory in Lexington, MA. The MIT culture is rich with intellectual and cultural stimulation and provides unlimited opportunities for personal and professional growth. We take pride in offering our employees greater autonomy, flexibility, and an opportunity to grow and learn new skills.
Many educational resources are available to all members of the MIT community. Our heterogeneous computing environment of 20,000+ client computers and thousands of servers allows employees to share information and programs, communicate with each other, and work together on problems and ideas in creative ways. The MIT library system consists of five large libraries and five smaller, more specialized collections. The MIT Libraries contain more than 2.2 million volumes, more than 21,000 current subscriptions, and extensive collections of microforms, maps, slides, scores, sound recordings, motion pictures, and videotapes. The MIT Press, one of the country's largest university presses, publishes professional, reference and scholarly books, graduate and undergraduate texts, and books for general audiences. The Press operates its own bookstore in Kendall Square.
The arts and athletics also play a vital role at MIT. During the academic year, over 400 music, theater, and dance events are held on campus presented by ensembles such as the nationally acclaimed MIT Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Music Society, Concert Band, Concert Choir, Festival Jazz Ensemble, Dramashop, Shakespeare Ensemble, Musical Theater Guild, and Dance Workshop.
The List Visual Arts Center is internationally recognized for its contemporary art exhibitions and maintains MIT's permanent collection of over 1,000 paintings, sculptures, photographs and contemporary prints. The MIT Museum documents MIT's history and focuses on the relationship between technology, science, and art. MIT's extensive athletic program offers opportunities for sports instruction and participation at all levels.
Other benefits that MIT has to offer include a generous tuition assistance plan, health/life/dental insurance, 401(k) and tax deferred annuity plans, and twelve paid holidays. MIT also offers on-site childcare, a summer camp for children, on-site computer and professional development programs, and much more.
MIT is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.
