Meredith E. and Kathy T.
Tufts - New England Medical Center
Nominated by Laurie M.
In September of 2003, our twins daughters were born nearly 3 months too soon, weighing only 1 pound, 7 ounces and 2 pounds, 15 ounces. They spent 4 1/2 months in the neonatal intensive care unit at Tufts-New England Medical Center before they were strong enough to come home. During that time, they were cared for by an incredible team of nurses, doctors and therapists, but there were two nurses who will forever remain in our hearts. Meredith and Kathy cared for our daughters with an amazing amount of care and compassion - and they cared for us, too. Day after day, we watched our babies' chests rise and fall to hum of a ventilator. We sat helplessly as they had feeding tubes placed, fought off infections and underwent surgeries and blood transfusion. On the days when things seemed almost too much to bear, Meredith and Kathy would be there, not only for our babies, but for us as well. Some days it was a hug or a pat on the back as we tried to fight off the tears and on another day we might find small teddy bears who mysteriously appeared nuzzled up next to the girls in their isoletes. They cared for our girls - and yes, that was their job, but what touched us was how much they truly cared about them - that came from their hearts! Although it has been nearly 3 years since they were discharged from the hospital, Meredith and Kathy remain a very special part of our life. We only felt it fiittng that the women, who we regard as our angels, be our daughters' godmothers. Meredith and Kathy are experienced, dedicated and compassionate nurses who deserve to be honored.![]()
