Forget losing a few pounds. The Beacon Hill Athletic Club's "Survive" program challenges you to do just that. Twice a week for the next five weeks, former Marines will lead boot-camp-style training sessions with push-ups, pulls-ups, and cardio kickboxing, as well as running with sandbags and maybe even carrying a colleague uphill. "If someone wants to do yoga or Pilates, I don't recommend they come to this," says Lee Kennon (below right), who will lead the regimen at the club's Brighton location (another instructor will be at the Wellesley location). Don't worry, Kennon has no plans to be your personal drill sergeant. "I'm not going to scream or belittle anybody," he says. "It's pretty much like anything else, you're going to get out what you put into it." Wed and Fri 6-7 p.m. Free for members, $15 per class for non-members. Beacon Hill Athletic Club, 470 Washington St., Brighton. 617-562-0202. beaconhillathleticclubs.com
