THE 1 BEST HOPE FOR A MUSICAL WHITE HOUSE
Meghan McCain, the nominee's 23-year-old daughter, has yet to reveal her comprehensive plan for an Iraq pullout. But she has provided a fine blueprint for the White House iPod. Forget Barack Obama's I-like-everything shtick and John McCain's disturbing decision to co-opt the deadly-dull Jackson Browne. Meghan, on her blog, ticks off 16 playlists which, taken as a whole, may be more comprehensive than either candidate's plan to free us from reliance on foreign oil. She's got deep album cuts (Whiskeytown's "Don't Wanna Know Why"), punk rock (Sex Pistols' "No Feelings"), and even some Foghat. And her country list raises an intriguing plotline: What's Dad going to do when the Bush-hating Dixie Chicks anthem, "Not Ready to Make Nice," shows up in the shuffle? www.mccainblogette.com/playlists - GEOFF EDGERS

THE 1 NEW TRIP
In shows like "Scooby-Doo" and "Josie and the Pussycats," cartoon magnates Hanna-Barbera found the spot where childhood met psychedelia. No show was more out there than "The Banana Splits Adventure Hour" - and now the furry four are back in a series of shorts on the Cartoon Network. It's not as trippy as the 1968 original, but the "Laugh-In" vibe is intact. Fingers crossed that the gals from the Sour Grapes Bunch still remember how to go-go dance. - CHRISTOPHER MUTHER

THE 1 AUTUMN REFRESHMENT
This is my favorite time of year. Not because the air cools. Not because the kids go back to school. It's because of the pumpkin ales. Ahh, that perfect marriage of hops, malt, and squash - aromatic and spicy without being flowery or sweet. It's a seasonal brew, so you have to snap it up when it arrives in early September - and horde it - because it'll be hard to find after mid-October. Personal favorites: the pumpkin ales made by Blue Moon, Smuttynose, and Dogfish Head. - STEVE GREENLEE

THE 1 MOVIE-AD SONG
The Coen brothers being so hit and miss, who knows how good "Burn After Reading" will be. The movie opens Friday. It bodes well, though, that its TV ads feature Spirit's "I Got a Line on You." (Pictured: Spirit singer Randy California.) Sounding as fresh as when it was released 40 years ago, it's one of the great Southern California singles: clean, taut, airborne. You can bet The Dude has it, probably on 8 track, somewhere in his collection. - MARK FEENEY

THE 1 BARGAIN BOUQUET
Winston Flowers' blossoms are beautiful, but they're not exactly a bargain. An average arrangement can cost you $85 or more. That is, unless you go to one of their brick-and-mortar stores, where you can score a mixed bouquet for $15. Flowers wind up in these bunches when there aren't enough of them to make a full arrangement. The results are less formal, but just as pretty. www.winstonflowers.com for locations. - DEVRA FIRST

THE 1 KISS-OFF MUSIC VIDEO
Pink is one of the few pop stars on the planet endowed with that elusive combo of pipes, humor, and cojones, and in the video for her new single, "So What," she puts her skill set to work in the service of post-divorce catharsis. The clip features a chainsaw, violence against newlyweds, tears, beers, a salon day gone horribly wrong, and a good-natured cameo from her ex (motocross racer Carey Hart). Watch it and cheer. www.pinkspage.com/videos - JOAN ANDERMAN
