Recent bird sightings on Cape Cod (as of July 29) as reported to the Massachusetts Audubon Society.
An immature bald eagle was seen at Salt Pond in Eastham on July 25.
The seabird show seems to be dwindling; however, many shearwaters are still waiting to be seen. A 20-minute stop at First Encounter Beach in Eastham yielded at least a dozen Cory’s shearwaters close to shore.
Shorebird numbers are on the rise. A three-hour trip to South Beach on July 27 had the following birds: 6 Canada geese, 1 American black duck, 5 black scoters, 1 Cory’s shearwater, 100 double-crested cormorants, 1 great blue heron, 1 great egret, 7 snowy egrets, 1 osprey, 2 Northern harriers, 50 black-bellied plovers, 20 semipalmated plovers, 5 piping plovers, 12 American oystercatchers, 1 spotted sandpiper, 30 greater yellowlegs, 30 Eastern willets, 3 Western willets, 12 lesser yellowlegs, 15 whimbrels, 5 Hudsonian godwits, 1 marbled godwit, 3 ruddy turnstones, 5 red knots, 50 sanderlings, 200 semipalmated sandpipers, 1 Western sandpiper, 80 least sandpipers, 3 white-rumped sandpipers, 2 dunlins, 300 short-billed dowitchers, 1 lesser black-backed gull, 5 least terns, 2 black terns, 5 roseate terns, 40 common terns, 3 Eastern phoebes, 50 tree swallows, 3 bank swallows, 12 barn swallows, 3 cedar waxwings, 2 Savannah sparrows, 4 saltmarsh sharp-tailed sparrows, 1 seaside sparrow, and 15 red-winged blackbirds.
A trip to North Monomoy on July 28 was just as productive. Participants saw 7 Canada geese, 3 American black ducks, 5 common eiders, 1 surf scoter, 6 white-winged scoter, 5 black scoters, 1 red-breasted merganser, 1 Wilson’s storm-petrel, 150 double-crested cormorants, 3 great blue herons, 6 great egrets, 12 snowy egrets, 1 black-crowned night-heron, 1 osprey, 15 black-bellied plovers, 20 semipalmated plovers, 2 piping plovers, 8 American oystercatchers, 30 greater yellowlegs, 20 willets, 20 lesser yellowlegs, 2 whimbrels, 2 Hudsonian godwits, 2 red knots, 12 sanderlings, 50 semipalmated sandpipers, 30 least sandpipers, 3 white-rumped sandpipers, 300 short-billed dowitchers, 1 least tern, 30 common terns, 1 Forster’s tern, 2 mourning doves, 1 Eastern phoebe, 2 horned larks, 30 tree swallows, 2 barn swallows, 2 cedar waxwings, 5 Savannah sparrows, 8 saltmarsh sharp-tailed sparrows, 2 seaside sparrows, 5 song sparrows, 20 red-winged blackbirds, 1 Eastern meadowlark, 5 common grackles, 5 brown-headed cowbirds, and 3 house finches.
