When my nephew Charles was about 6 years old, I called his home to speak to my brother and, since it was a school day, was surprised that Charles answered the phone. I asked him why he was home, and he answered, “Because it’s Martha Luther King Day and we have the day off.”

My husband and I trekked to an upscale department store for its after-Christmas sale. A very young woman waited on us, providing the impeccable customer service that this store is renowned for. As she and I searched the sale table for a particular pair of pants my husband had spotted on a mannequin, she asked me his waist size. I replied, “It depends on who you ask. I say it’s 31, but he says it’s 30,” at which point my husband appeared at my side. The wise young woman handed him a pair of pants, saying, “These are a 31, but they run small.” They fit perfectly. Mission accomplished.
