"Good Morning America" co-host Robin Roberts came out publicly for the first time Sunday in a Facebook message that reflects on her health battles and expresses gratitude for the people who supported her, including her longtime girlfriend, Amber Laign.

“I am grateful for my entire family, my long time girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together,” Roberts wrote.

Roberts made headlines in May 2012 when she landed the interview with President Obama where he first announced his support for marriage equality. A month later, Roberts was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, a blood and bone marrow disease, which was related to treatments that followed her 2007 breast cancer diagnosis. In yesterday’s Facebook post, Roberts also thanks her sister, who was also her bone marrow donor.

The theme of the post is gratitude.

“Reading this comforts me and I hope the same for you: ‘If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are at peace, you are living in the present,’” Roberts wrote. “At this moment I am at peace and filled with joy and gratitude.”
