One minute guide to napkin folding

One-Minute Napkin Folding by DIY Boston

Folded cloth napkins are an easy, inexpensive way to elevate your Thanksgiving table. They may look like they take a lot of time, but they're quite easy once you know how. Here are 5 different designs that take just one minute to create. Decorate your place settings, no butler necessary.

Pro tip: start with clean, starched, and ironed napkins for crisp results.

Style 1: Silverware Pocket
1. Start with a square napkin face down. Fold top half toward you.
2. Fold into quarters. Rotate so that the open end is in the top left corner.
3. Fold down 2 layers to the opposite, bottom right corner.
4. Flip the napkin over.
5. Fold the right third of the napkin in toward the center.
6. Fold the left third over the right third.
7. Flip over and stash your silverware stylishly!

Style 2: Pyramid
1. Start with a square napkin face down. Fold diagonally.
2. Rotate so that the open end is toward you. Fold right end down to middle seam.
3. Fold down left end down to middle seam.
4. Flip the napkin over.
5. Fold the top half down to meet the bottom half.
6. Fold in half again, and stand up on a plate.

Style 3: Fleur-de-Lys
1. Start with a square napkin face down. Fold diagonally.
2. Rotate so that the open end is toward you.
3. Fold the bottom corner up over the diagonal, about an inch.
4. Accordion-fold the napkin from left to right.
5. Pinch at the bottom, insert in a wine glass, and fluff.

Style 4: The Rose
1. Start with a square napkin face down. Fold all the corners in to meet in the center.
2. Fold all four new corners in to the center.
3. Flip the napkin over.
4. Fold all the corners into the center, holding them in place with your fingers or an object.
5. Lift a corner, pull out the "petals" underneath. Repeat with remaining corners.
6. Pull out the "petals" under each side. Place on a plate.

Style 5: The Diamond Pocket
1. Start with a square napkin face down. Fold in half toward you, then in quarters.
2. Rotate so that the open corner is at the top. Fold one layer down to meet the bottom corner.
3. Fold down the next layer toward the bottom corner, but not quite all the way to meet it (if your napkin has seams, use those as a guide).
4. Fold down the third layer toward the bottom corner, but don't quite meet the second corner.
5. Flip the napkin over.
6. Fold the side corners in to meet in the middle. Check the front for symmetry, and then place silverware inside.
