As eating seasonally becomes more mainstream, restaurants and fast food joints have definitely caught on and pumpkin flavored everything is, well, everywhere right now — with the pumpkin spice latte reaching full-on cult status.
Use this copycat version of the fall coffeeshop fix (which has a tendency to sell out just when you need one most) to make a sweet, savory, and super money-saving version at home, all without needing a steamer! Just in time for the neighborhood costume parade tonight, may we suggest making a batch for friends or roommates using this trick for the ultimate fall treat.
DIY PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE
Created by Miko Carating of Boston-based startup TurningArt (formerly our editorial assistant!), this DIY pumpkin spice latte recipe is not only inventive but incredibly addicting. You've been warned.
- 1/2 cup hot coffee
- 2 cups milk, soy milk, or almond milk
- 2 heaping tablespoons canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix)
- Sugar or honey or agave (to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- 1 tablespoon real vanilla extract
- Coffeemaker (any kind)
- Mixing bowl
- 1 1/2 pint wide mouth ball jars with lid and band
- Cuppow wide mouth lid (optional)
1. Make your coffee as usual (as strong as you like, using a French press or drip coffeemaker), then add vanilla extract, pumpkin pie spice, and sweetener. Stir.
2. Pour milk and canned pumpkin into a saucepan and simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally just until hot. Remove from burner.
3. Pour into bowl and place in the refrigerator to cool for about seven to ten minutes.
4. Remove bowl from refrigerator and strain pumpkin from milk by pouring back into rinsed saucepan.
5. Pour pumpkin-flavored milk into your Ball jar or (another a microwave-safe container that can be covered with a lid). Make sure the milk fills up no more than half the container.
6. Cover with lid and shake vigorously for 30 seconds until milk becomes frothy and
doubles in volume.
7. Remove lid and immediately microwave for 30 seconds. (Congrats, you've just steamed milk without expensive equipment!)
8. Gently pour the coffee into the frothy pumpkin milk.
9. Sprinkle a little pumpkin pie spice on top of the foam
10. Cover with Cuppow wide mouth lid if you're taking to go!
Sure, with 10 recipe steps for a cup of coffee it sounds complicated — lots of dirty dishes, lots of work, lots of time — and it is the first time you make it. Once you get the hang of it, however; it's definitely worth the effort and the $6 per serving savings. Plus, it has that absolutely wonderful real pumpkin flavor (and nutritional value) that you'll never get from a store-bought pumpkin-flavored latte. Out and about during the height of leaf-peeping season, we'd bet you can make one in less time than you'd be standing in line, and you get a free Shake Weight-style workout from it. Score!
