finding a date as a single.jpgBy Dara Sussman

As one of the world’s best college towns, Boston is a great place to meet young, motivated singles. But since the city is basically crawling with students, it can be a little tougher to find someone if you’re done with dating the quality of men and women you meet at  Wonder Bar or next to the frat party booze ice luge. To find your ideal man or woman -- a little more mature but still young enough to be $100,000 deep in student loan debt -- you have to go hunting in his or her habitat.

Since certain types of people tend to frequent certain types of places, this process will be a whole lot easier if you narrow down the kind of guy or girl you’re in the market for and head where their kind hangs out. The following are some of your best bets, broken down by occupation and personality type.

If you’re looking for someone sophisticated...Check out MFA First Fridays. On the first Friday of every month, the Museum of Fine Arts hosts a gathering in their Koch Gallery. The night of fine art, live music, cocktails, and tapas runs from 5:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m., and admission is free (food and drinks will cost you though, so bring cash). It’s a low-key atmosphere and a nice alternative for those who are sick of getting man-handled at Gypsy Bar.

If you’re looking for McDreamy...Try the Liberty Hotel, where Thursday nights are always hopping (and any weekend night is great). On the first floor, you'll find the prison-themed bar Clink, which can get a little crowded -- but don't worry, you can always go to the upstairs lobby area, which also has a bar. You'll meet a lot of people from MGH since it’s right next door, but the Liberty is also a great place to meet all kinds of young professionals.

If you’re looking for the Amy Poehler to your Will Arnett...Improv Asylum will be your best bet for a mate who can make you laugh. You can catch nightly improv shows, scripted comedy plays, and sketch revues and hook up with one of the actors or an audience member who has a good sense of humor. Bonus: They serve alcohol, in case you need to drown out the embarrassment of being pulled on stage.

If you’re looking for a manic-pixie dream girl...The Beehive restaurant and bar is your spot. They have great food and a fun cocktail menu, and you can sit down in the dining room and listen to live music. But since you're looking to meet someone -- a quirky, artistic, Zooey Deschanel type, most likely -- stick to the bar area.

If you’re looking for someone to sing you to sleep at night...Try The Middle East and bag yourself a musician or music lover. The venue has three live music performance rooms and a restaurant, Zuzu, though I recommend skipping the food until you have a lover locked down. Hummus breath is no way to entice a potential mate.

If you’re looking for a guy or gal who fills out a blazer nicely...Grab a happy hour drink at Del Frisco’s, located in the Liberty Wharf, to find yourself a suit. It’s a nice place with a classy atmosphere, and, as they say, “girls go crazy for a sharp-dressed man.” Or, if you're an ad industry person looking for the other half to your perfect power couple, check out one of the Ad Club's events. You might find a a date, or maybe a job -- either way, it's a win-win.

If you’re looking to shoot fish in a barrel...of the slightly tipsy female variety, hit up the annual Second Glass Wine Riot. Sure, when you think "wine tasting," WASP-y old white people probably come to mind, but Wine Riot is so much cooler than that. The event features a photo booth area, temporary tattoo station, food from local restaurants, and, of course, wine. This year's event is April 20-21.

For a concentration of drunk guys, try the Boston Beer Summit, a sampling event featuring live music and over 200 beers from local, regional, and national breweries. (If you don’t like beer, just keep going back to the hard cider table with different hats on so they don’t recognize you.) This year’s Beer Summit is April 13-14.

Happy Hunting!
