Father's Day is a fairly new holiday, and wasn't given national recognition until President Nixon established a permanent national observance on the third Sunday in June.
Father's Day was originally conceived in 1909 by Sonara Smart Dodd, who was raised by her dad after her mother died. Her pop's birthday was in June, so she held the first Father's Day on June 19, 1910 in her hometown of Spokane, Wash.
