Elegant simplicity wins on the Emmys red carpet

There can be beauty in simplicity, something easily forgotten on the red carpet as actresses attempt to dazzle and vamp with beads and sequins over layers of silk and chiffon. But many of the best gowns at the 65th annual Emmy Awards Sunday were not the overworked and too often underwhelming pieces that have become a staple. The stunners were simple. Prints were an afterthought, and those awkward silhouettes, the kind generally favored by Heidi Klum, faded into to the background. The gorgeous Christina Hendricks cited the work of artist John Singer Sargent as an influence for her fitted black gown by Christian Siriano. It’s an unusually subdued red carpet when an Edwardian artist is cited as inspiration.
