A taste of spring

May 1, 2008

With sweeping views of the waterfront and Financial District as a backdrop, the State Room atop 60 State St. was the setting of the annual Beyond Shelter fete last week, with more than 850 partygoers clinking glasses and sampling fare from 30 area restaurants. The event raised more than $220,000 for programs supported by Friends of Boston's Homeless. Even Mayor Tom Menino got in on the fun, though he made clear that he would not be performing with either of the evening's bands, 4 Guys in Tuxes and C-Zone Music. - CAROL BEGGY

ALAN PRICE, 44

What brings you here? I'm one of the team working at the Rancatore's Ice Cream table. They have the best ice cream. They're in Lexington and Belmont.
And in a kilt, no less. Yes, a kilt. It's comfortable, I have to say. This is my golf shirt. I thought that was a nice way to go with the kilt.
Is that your kilt or did you all borrow it? No, not my kilt. I have no idea where you get kilts, but I can say that nothing goes better with ice cream than a kilt.
OK, I have to ask that all important question about that eternal mystery of the Scottish Highlands: What does one wear under a kilt? Ah, a great mystery. I'm afraid I can't tell you that answer. It's going to have to remain a mystery for your readers.

You work for Express, so I guess we have the answer to the "who you are wearing" question. Yes, this is Express.
So you had the dress and were just waiting for the right event? Oh, you have no idea. I bought this dress right after it arrived in the store.
What are you most looking forward to doing this summer? I'm new here, but my husband knows the area. He has a Harley and we like to get out. I want to see more of the Cape, a lot more of the Cape. I've been there only one time.
Of all the food tonight, anything that stands out or that you would recommend? Salsa's almond chicken. Great, great, really great.

JULIE EDWARDS, 25

So tell me about what you're wearing. The dress is French Connection. It's a little big so I belted it.
What brings you to the event? My friend is friends with the general manager at Teatro, we got tickets that way. It's just a fun night out.
Other than Teatro, what's your favorite restaurant in town? Sonsie and Antonia's Italian Bistro in Davis Square.
Tell me something fun about your job. I get to go out and meet people and see parts of the city. I'm not stuck in a cubicle. So I've been able to learn about nonprofits and community groups and city programs like the Main Streets program.

BILL PHENIX, 48
Concord, N.H.
Job Account exec at WXRV-FM (92.5)
Are you the only person in New Hampshire who isn't involved in a political campaign who wears a bow-tie? I'm pretty much the only person I know who wears a bow-tie.
Where do you get your clothes? Ray Boucher's Britches of Concord.
You have a closet full of these? I hope to, I always wanted to have a custom suit and so I got one. This has more pockets than a safari jacket.
And the rest of it? These are two antique fobs on a real watch. . . . This, the knife on the end of the chain, was my grandfather's.
Do you get down to Boston very often? I perform with the Middlesex County Volunteers Fifes & Drums. I'm a fifer. I was just in town for Patriots Day. We played at the Hatch Shell a couple of years ago with the Pops.

DEL O'CALLAGHAN
Beacon Hill
Job Personal assistant
You're a personal assistant. Does that mean you can't tell us who you work for? Yes, I can't say.
So how are Tom and Gisele? Ha! Wouldn't that be a great gig? I'd never get any work done.
Tell about what you're wearing tonight. The shirt with the tails is from Vera Wang. The purse is Paolo Masi. The skirt [she gets a friend to read the label] is Robert Rodriguez.
You said you came to Boston 14 years ago from Cork, Ireland. What's your favorite Irish pub here? The Field. I used to go to the Brendan Behan, when I first got here.
So what are you looking forward to doing now that the weather is getting nicer? Running along the Esplanade and spring shopping.
